Is it Cheaper to Rekey Locks or Change Them Completely? (UK Pricing)

When you move into a new property or lose a set of keys, you need immediate security control. The choice comes down to two options: rekeying (changing the lock pins so the old key won't work) or changing the entire lock mechanism. In the UK, rekeying is almost always the more cost-effective choice, provided the existing lock is of high quality and meets British Standards.
Rekeying: The Cost-Effective Option
Rekeying involves a locksmith removing the cylinder (the barrel where the key is inserted) and changing the configuration of the internal pins and springs.
Process: The locksmith installs new pins that match a brand new key. The existing lock mechanism and housing remain in the door.
Cost: Rekeying labour is typically much faster and cheaper than a full replacement, as you are not paying for a new mechanism or cylinder housing.
Condition: This is only suitable if the existing lock is in good working order and already meets security standards like BS 3621 or TS007 3-Star.
Changing the Lock: When Replacement is Necessary
A full lock change involves removing the entire mechanism—cylinder, housing, bolts, and all—and fitting a brand new one. Replacement is necessary in these scenarios:
Damage: If the lock has been damaged by a break-in attempt or is faulty/worn out.
Upgrade: If the existing lock is non-compliant (e.g., a standard Euro cylinder that needs upgrading to an anti-snap lock).
Security Grade: If you want to upgrade a standard lock to a higher security grade (e.g., moving to an ANSI Grade 1 deadbolt).
The Peters Locksmiths Recommendation
We prioritise the customer's budget and security. If your existing locks meet BS standards, we recommend rekeying all doors and windows to save money. If your locks are old, worn, or non-compliant (e.g., standard cylinders), we recommend replacing them with certified security hardware.
Local Authority Check: Rekeying a house full of working locks in Bournemouth often costs significantly less than a full replacement, providing immediate security control for new homeowners.
