High-Security Deadbolts: What ANSI Grade 1 Means for Your Home

For timber front doors, the most important barrier against forced entry is the deadbolt. While the UK relies heavily on the BS 3621 Kitemark for compliance, understanding the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) grading system (Grade 1, 2, or 3) provides another level of context regarding a lock's physical durability and resistance to force. For maximum security, you should aim for the highest durability rating: ANSI Grade 1.

Understanding the ANSI Grading System ANSI grades measure a lock's physical strength and longevity through rigorous testing against forced entry, cycling (how long the lock lasts), and key torque.

  • ANSI Grade 1 (Best): This is the highest possible security rating. It signifies superior resistance to severe physical attack (like kick-ins) and prolonged use (often rated for over 250,000 cycles). This is the standard recommended for high-security applications.

  • ANSI Grade 2 (Better): Suitable for most residential security but does not have the same level of resistance to sustained physical force as Grade 1.

  • ANSI Grade 3 (Good): The minimum acceptable standard for residential security.

Layering BS and ANSI Standards

In the UK, the focus must remain on the BS 3621 certification, as this is what guarantees the lock resists typical UK burglary methods (drilling, picking, lock snapping—if a cylinder lock) and ensures insurance compliance.

  • Ideal Security: The gold standard is a deadlock that meets both standards: a BS 3621 Kitemarked lock that also achieves an ANSI Grade 1 durability rating. This combination ensures protection against both covert attack (picking) and overt attack (physical force).

  • The Difference: The BS Kitemark focuses on how the lock resists attack (e.g., anti-drill plates); the ANSI grade focuses on how long the lock resists sustained force (durability and strength.)

The Importance of the Strike Plate

A Grade 1 deadbolt is useless if it is fitted into a weak door frame. We always recommend reinforcing the door frame and fitting a high-quality metal strike plate with long, heavy-duty screws, ensuring the entire assembly resists a kick-in.
