Best Lock Lubricant: Why PTFE and Graphite Beat Household Oils (Not WD-40)

Proper lubrication is the cheapest form of lock insurance, preventing sticking, seizure, and ultimately, costly breakdowns. However, using the wrong product is worse than using nothing at all. As locksmiths, we strongly advise against common household oils like WD-40 or cooking spray, which can damage your lock's internal mechanism. The best choice is a dry lubricant like PTFE (Teflon) or Graphite Powder.

The Problem with Standard Household Oils

Standard wet lubricants attract and trap dust, dirt, and microscopic metal particles worn off the key or mechanism. This creates a thick, sticky 'sludge' that gums up the internal pins and springs of the cylinder, leading to accelerated wear and catastrophic failure over time.

The Approved Locksmith Solutions

  • PTFE (Teflon) or Silicone Spray: These are superior for external or high-moisture locks (like uPVC or coastal properties). They dry clean, leaving behind a smooth, water-repellent film that resists dust and protects against corrosion.

  • Graphite Powder: This classic locksmith choice is ideal for traditional internal locks and deadbolts. The fine carbon powder coats the internal parts, ensuring smooth operation without attracting grime.

  • Application: Apply the lubricant sparingly—a small puff of graphite or a quick spritz of silicone—into the keyway and onto the bolt. Operate the key several times to distribute it.

Why Lubrication is Critical for locks in Dorset

In coastal areas like Bournemouth and Christchurch, the battle against Lock Corrosion is continuous. Regular lubrication (every 3–6 months) with a high-quality silicone spray is essential asset protection, preventing premature failure caused by salt air.

Local Authority Check: We regularly clean and lubricate external and uPVC locks in the Dorset area as part of our scheduled maintenance services to prevent failures caused by coastal salt air.
